FOMO: The Modern Stress That Makes Living a Simple Life Hard
Today early in the morning, when I was half awake, I picked up my phone and checked the updates on the Goa photos I had posted on social media.
The curiosity to see likes and comments was so strong that I was scrolling with half-open eyes.
My happy hormones went up instantly when I saw so many likes and positive comments.
But within seconds, the next photo appeared — my best friend enjoying a holiday in Europe.
And suddenly, everything inside me shifted.
My excitement dropped.
My attention moved from my own happiness to her pictures.
I started feeling restless, jealous, anxious… even angry.
I couldn’t tolerate the fact that she was at a more expensive destination, having a “better” time.
And just like that, I woke up in a bad mood.
My joy from the Goa trip disappeared, replaced by jealousy and the feeling of being “less.”
“Why can’t I afford such a luxurious trip?”
This thought stayed with me all morning.
My purpose in sharing this incident is not to tell you my story, but to show you something important:
Almost all of us are suffering from FOMO — a modern stress that is slowly taking control of our minds.
This feeling has a name.
And today, it has become one of the biggest emotional challenges of our generation.
What Exactly Is FOMO?
FOMO stands for Fear of Missing Out —
the uncomfortable feeling that others are enjoying life more than you.
- It shows up quietly
- when you compare your routine to someone’s highlight reel
- when you feel rushed to follow every trend.
- when you think others are moving ahead faster.
- when you start craving things you don’t even need.
The truth is simple:
FOMO is not about what others are doing. It’s about how we see our own lives.
Why FOMO Has Become So Common Today
FOMO isn’t new — but our lifestyle has magnified it.
1. Too many options
We have endless choices — clothes, phones, jobs, destinations, even diets.
But more options do not mean more clarity.
They create confusion and regret.
2. Too much information
We know what 500 people are doing every day.
Earlier, we compared ourselves only with neighbors.
Now, we compare with the entire world.
3. Too much noise
Notifications, trends, updates…
Our mind rarely gets silence.
4. Too many expectations
Earn more.
Travel more.
Buy more.
Achieve more.
All this makes us feel like we are never enough.
The Real Damage FOMO Causes
FOMO doesn’t just steal our peace — it shapes how we live.
- we feel anxious without any real reason
- we rush through life without enjoying it
- we compare every little thing
- we buy things only to fit in
- we lose clarity, confidence, and focus
- we stop appreciating the present moment
- Worst of all?
We start living someone else’s life instead of our own.
These stresses make living a simple life extremely difficult.
Because we stop appreciating what we have… and become obsessed with what others have.
But just like every problem has a solution —
FOMO too can be reduced, simply by living a simple life.
Living a Simple Life: The Unexpected Antidote to FOMO
First, let me make one thing clear:
Living a simple life does not mean living without fun or luxury.
That is a huge misconception.
Living a simple life means:
- choosing peace over pressure
- choosing clarity over confusion
- choosing needs over mindless wants
- choosing your pace over society’s race
- It means building a life that feels right for
But despite wanting this peaceful life, most people struggle.
Why?
Because FOMO keeps distracting us.
Here are some real-life situations that show how FOMO behaves — and how living a simple life helps you take control instantly.
1. When others buy new things and you feel restless
A friend buys a new phone or trendy outfit.
Your mind whispers:
“I think I need that too…”
That is FOMO.
Living a simple life teaches you to pause and ask:
“Do I really need this?”
And suddenly, the urge disappears.
You feel lighter, not left out.
2. When you see others on vacation and feel behind
You see someone’s beautiful beach photos.
Your first thought:
“Why am I not enjoying like them?”
This is FOMO again.
But living a simple life helps you value:
- quiet mornings
- family time
- nature
- slow routines
- your own pace
- You realise you don’t need to match someone else’s trip to feel fulfilled.
3. When you say yes to plans just to fit in
You join parties even when tired… just so you don’t “miss out.”
That’s FOMO.
Living a simple life gives you the confidence to say:
“Not today. I need rest.”
And the best part?
You no longer feel guilty.
4. When trends make your life feel outdated
New skincare, new gadgets, new clothing trends — every week brings something new.
Social media pressures you to keep up.
But when you start living a simple life, you focus on value, not trends.
You choose what genuinely matters — the rest simply fades from your mind.
5. When you compare your success with others
Someone is promoted.
Someone buys a car.
Someone goes abroad.
Earlier, this ruined your mood.
Now, living a simple life reminds you:
Life is not a race.
Your timeline is your own.
That alone destroys FOMO at its root.
6. When social media makes you insecure
Scrolling used to make you anxious.
Now, with simple living, you:
- unfollow pressure
- follow inspiration
- spend more time offline
- You stop feeling like you’re missing something.
You start feeling present.
Why Living a Simple Life Reduces FOMO
1. Fewer choices = less confusion
You know what matters, so you aren’t distracted by 100 unnecessary options.
2. You buy only what you need
You no longer feel pressured to match trends.
3. Digital clutter reduces
You unfollow, mute, and limit scrolling — and protect your peace.
4. You follow your own pace
You stop running in a race you never agreed to join.
5. You build contentment
Gratitude grows, comparison dies.
Slowly, you realise:
There is nothing to “miss out on”
when you are living a simple life that feels right for you.
Moving From FOMO to JOMO
Here comes the beautiful shift.
Living a simple life doesn’t just reduce FOMO —
it introduces you to JOMO: the Joy of Missing Out.
JOMO means:
- enjoying slow days
- feeling peaceful when you skip trends
- valuing quality time over constant activity
- enjoying silence
- not feeling pressured by what others do
- living with intention, not anxiety
- It gives you the freedom to say:
“I don’t need to be everywhere.
I don’t need to do everything.
I choose peace.”
How JOMO Looks in Real Life
- resting on Sunday without guilt
- appreciating your journey without comparison
- letting trends pass without feeling outdated
- shopping less, valuing more
- enjoying quiet moments without needing constant stimulation
- feeling happy even on simple, slow days
- This is the kind of happiness that stays.
Conclusion
We don’t lose life by missing out.
We lose life by chasing everything.
FOMO complicates life.
Living a simple life simplifies it.
And JOMO completes it.
If we learn to appreciate slow mornings, quiet moments, and small joys…
we’ll realise peace was never missing —
we were just too busy to notice it.
