How Financial Minimalism Changed My Life Forever
I realized the value of money when I had none. Financial minimalism was never something I had thought about, but when life took a drastic turn, I was forced to understand its importance. Often, we don’t value what we have until it’s gone. This applies not just to relationships but also to money. My husband and I learned this lesson the hard way. Our business was flourishing, and with increasing income, our desires also skyrocketed. Initially, we lived in a small one-BHK apartment, but as we earned more, we moved into a lavish bungalow. Luxury became our way of life—we had a dream car, a house full of servants, and our daughter studied in a top international school. It felt like we had achieved everything.
But every coin has two sides.
A Major Shock That Changed My Life
When COVID hit, our financial world collapsed. My husband’s business payments got stuck, and overnight, we were drowning in debt. To my shock, everything we owned was on loan. The house, the car, even the lifestyle—we were living beyond our means without realizing it. Money stopped flowing in, and we lost everything. Our house was sold to pay off debts. Our car was repossessed. Our daughter had to shift from an international school to a government school. The same relatives who once admired us disappeared when we needed them most. We faced financial trauma and health issues at the same time. It was the darkest phase of our life.
This crisis forced us to take a hard look at our finances. That’s when we discovered financial minimalism—the practice of simplifying finances and living with intention. Many times, I felt like giving up, but by embracing a minimalist lifestyle, we found a way out.
What is Financial Minimalism?
Financial minimalism is about making mindful financial decisions, eliminating unnecessary expenses, and focusing on what truly matters. Instead of spending money to impress others or chasing a luxury lifestyle, financial minimalism encourages saving, investing wisely, and living within one’s means. This shift helped us regain financial control and peace of mind.
How We Recovered from Financial Problems
1. Downsized Our Lifestyle
After losing our bungalow, we moved into a small 2BHK apartment in a quieter city. This debt-free home felt like heaven because it gave us peace, security, and financial freedom.
A key lesson: if you have extra money, invest in property that can support you in tough times.
2. Switched to a Minimalist Vehicle
We lost our expensive SUV but replaced it with an affordable second-hand car. The benefits of financial minimalism became evident—lower maintenance costs and less stress. Now, we only use our car for long trips, opting for public transport for short distances. This small change significantly reduced our fuel and maintenance expenses.
3. Simplified Our Child’s Education
Our daughter had to leave her international school, but she adapted well to a public school. Initially, I feared the transition, but soon I realized that expensive education often comes with unnecessary financial burdens. She was happier in an environment where kids didn’t compete over material things. I also stopped stressing over extravagant school menus and enjoyed the freedom of preparing simple, healthy meals.
4. Eliminated Unnecessary Expenses
We started questioning every expense: Do we really need this? We stopped ordering unnecessary items and focused only on essentials. Instead of eating out every weekend, I began cooking our favorite meals at home, which saved us thousands and strengthened our family bond.
5. Quit Bad Habits and Lifestyle Inflation
My husband quit smoking and drinking, which not only saved money but also improved his health. He now spends more time with us rather than socializing in expensive clubs. He also began using public transport instead of driving alone, saving significantly on fuel and parking.
6. Built an Emergency Fund
One of the biggest lessons from our financial crisis was the importance of an emergency fund. We started saving a small amount each month for unexpected expenses, which gave us peace of mind and financial security. Minimalism and financial freedom go hand in hand—having fewer financial burdens means more freedom to enjoy life.
7. Practiced Living Below Our Means
Even when our income improved, we continued our minimalist lifestyle. We resisted the urge to upgrade our car or move back into a luxury apartment. This ensured long-term financial stability and kept stress away.
8. Focused on Passive Income and Financial Education
We diversified our income sources. My husband started freelancing and online work, while I began a small home-based business. We also dedicated time to financial education, reading books and watching videos on how to practice financial minimalism. This helped us make smarter decisions and avoid repeating past mistakes.
The New Life We Built
Our financial crisis was the best teacher. It forced us to simplify our finances and taught us that happiness does not come from material possessions but from financial security, health, and strong family bonds. Today, we live a peaceful life without financial stress. We have savings, live within our means, and feel no pressure to maintain a false social image.
