What Is a Spiritual Awakening? 7 Signs You’re Changing

You’re changing… and it’s not a small thing.

Until you experience real pain yourself, you don’t truly understand someone else’s pain. I realized this only when life hit me with a massive shock—one that triggered my spiritual awakening and shook my entire world. It was like a picture of life where so many characters appeared, played their roles, and then simply walked away. Some betrayed me, some took everything from me… It might sound like a movie script to you right now, but this is the bitter truth of life that no one wants to swallow. We all just want to live in the illusion that a “good life” means lots of money and a big social circle.I always discuss things that have actually happened to me, so I can truly connect with my readers. Because I’m not some spiritual guru or an extraordinary being—I’m just a simple woman who lost a lot in life… and in return, gained one priceless thing: spiritual awakening.

What is Spiritual Awakening?

Like many of you, I used to hear words like “spirituality” and “spiritual awakening” on social media platforms and think they were boring topics. I’d skip videos or posts explaining them, dismissing the people talking about it as dull. But today, the time has come when I’m the one deeply discussing spirituality and profound wisdom.Everyone experiences a spiritual awakening, but it happens at the right time for each person. It truly begins when something major shakes your life—not from book knowledge, but from raw, real experience. Spiritual awakening is when you distance yourself from worldly attachments and societal things, and instead immerse yourself in nature and God.

How Does Spiritual Awakening Happen?

It doesn’t come by force or strict rules. It often starts on its own, like a seed sprouting at the perfect moment. In simple words, here are the common ways it begins:

  1. Major life events or deep pain (the most common trigger)

When a big sorrow hits—like losing a loved one, job loss, serious health issues, financial ruin, or a relationship breaking apart—your old way of living “breaks” too. The pain forces you to ask deep questions: “Who am I really? What is the meaning of life?” This opens the door.

  2. Feeling empty or bored inside, even when everything looks perfect outside

Life seems good on the surface (great job, family, comforts), but inside there’s a void. You start searching for real peace and purpose.

  3. Sudden moments of deep peace or beauty

Sometimes it begins gently—watching a sunset, sitting in nature, or during meditation—and suddenly everything feels connected and alive.

  4. It can happen gradually or in a flash

For some, it’s like lightning—one big moment. For others, it’s slow, with small insights building over months or years.

7simple signs that spiritual awakening is happening—

  1. Questioning old beliefs (“Is this really true?”)

In the society we live in, we adopt so many beliefs from childhood. For example, people with money often see themselves as powerful—and that’s partly true. But during that time, we forget that most people love your money, not you. They’re around you because it fulfills some selfish need. The day the money is gone, those people vanish too—the ones who used to flatter you disappear. When you’re truly broke, relationships, friends, everything fades, and you end up alone. That’s when you start finding joy in God’s name and nature. A question arises in your mind: “Did people love me, or my money?”

  2. Craving peace, nature, or solitude—wanting to stay away from crowds/parties

We often find true peace only after something bad happens, because a shock breaks us. Fun with friends, dressing up, and partying no longer appeal. The only thing that brings comfort is connecting with nature and chanting God’s name.
Example: Raj used to be an ordinary guy—weekends meant parties with friends, loud music, laughter, dancing. He thought this was life, this was fun. Being in a crowd made him feel “alive.” Then he lost his job—a huge blow. Everything stopped. The crowds that once energized him now exhausted him. Loud noise gave him headaches, conversations felt hollow. Slowly, he started going to the park alone in the mornings—just sitting, listening to birds, watching trees, feeling the breeze.

  3. Becoming more compassionate, forgiving, and less angry

Small things that used to trigger anger now have less impact. You understand others better and forgive their mistakes easily.
Example: Amit used to get furious over traffic or office arguments. After losing a family member, he thought, “Everyone is struggling with their own pain.” He started forgiving easily and even helped strangers. His family noticed—he had become much calmer and kinder.

  4. Noticing your thoughts more (like watching clouds pass), without getting lost in them

Before, thoughts controlled you (worry, planning, anger). Now you watch them come and go, like clouds in the sky.
Example: Sneha used to overthink everything: “What if this happens?” One day in meditation, she realized thoughts just arise and pass. She became the observer, not the main character in the drama. It brought huge relief.

  5. Finding big joy in small things, and big problems feel less scary

A cup of tea, a flower, a child’s smile—these bring real happiness now. Major worries (money, future) don’t shake you as much—trust in life grows.
Example: After a health scare, Karan started finding joy in sunrises, fresh air, or talking to his mom. Before, only promotions made him happy. Now raindrops felt magical, and money problems seemed temporary. He said, “I worry less because I feel something bigger is supporting me.”

  6. Sudden craving for books, meditation, or spiritual content

You naturally feel drawn to spiritual books, calm talks/podcasts, or meditation. It doesn’t feel forced—it’s a gentle pull.
Example: Anjali used to read only novels. On a friend’s suggestion, she picked up The Power of Now and couldn’t stop. She started 10 minutes of daily meditation and watching spiritual videos. These filled the empty space inside her.

  7. Occasional confusion, fatigue, or emotional waves (this is normal—old things are clearing out)

You might feel lost, tired, cry for no reason, or have mood swings. It’s like the old “you” is being cleaned out to make space for the new.
Example: During her awakening, Riya felt exhausted and cried looking at old photos. She wondered, “Is this depression?” But she let the emotions flow—old fears and pain surfaced and left. Months later, she felt clearer and more energetic than before. It was like a soul spring cleaning.

These signs show your inner world is improving—even if it feels messy sometimes. Not everyone gets all signs, and the order varies.

The key: Be gentle with yourself—rest, journal, walk in nature, and trust the process. If any of this is happening to you (or someone you know), it’s a beautiful sign that you’re growing deeper. Which sign are you feeling the most right now? Share below—I’m listening
