9 Spiritual Awakening Symptoms I Personally Experienced
Have you ever gone through a painful chapter in life and suddenly found yourself pulled toward something deeper — spirituality? Maybe silence started to feel better than conversation. Maybe meditation began to feel like coming home. Maybe you noticed strange coincidences, felt closer to God, or simply stopped enjoying the things that used to excite you.
These experiences are often described as spiritual awakening symptoms, and I know this feeling intimately — because I lived it.
Looking back, I believe my spiritual journey began during one of the hardest periods of my life. At the time, I had no idea what “spiritual awakening” even meant. I didn’t know the changes happening inside me had anything to do with spirituality at all.
I just knew something inside me was shifting.
I became more drawn to God, the universe, meditation, and devotional music. I wanted to be alone more often. I started searching online, trying to answer one simple question:
Why am I changing so much?
As I dug deeper, I discovered the concept of spiritual awakening — and realized that many of the experiences I was having are commonly recognized as spiritual awakening symptoms. I later wrote a more detailed piece on this, What Is a Spiritual Awakening? 7 Signs You’re Changing, but today I want to get personal and share exactly what happened to me.
These are the 9 exact signs and experiences I noticed during that period of my life.
A quick note before we dive in: Spiritual awakening is a spiritual concept, and everyone interprets these experiences differently. What follows are my personal experiences and interpretations — not proof that anyone else is “spiritually awakening.” Some experiences, like ringing in the ears, can also have completely ordinary or medical explanations. Always keep that in mind.
1. Meditation Suddenly Became My Safe Place
One of the first spiritual awakening symptoms I noticed was a growing pull toward meditation.
During that difficult period, I was often deeply unhappy and troubled. I’d sit quietly, close my eyes, and just stay alone with my thoughts. What comforted me most was connecting with God.
At first, this lasted only 10 or 20 seconds. I’d close my eyes, talk to God in my heart, and get up again.
But slowly, something shifted.
Those 10-20 seconds became a few minutes. Then 15-20 minutes. I started looking forward to those quiet moments every single day.
I didn’t understand what was happening at first — I only knew that sitting quietly and connecting with God gave me a peace I couldn’t find anywhere in the outside world. That’s when I began to understand what meditation truly meant to me.
For me, meditation was never about doing it “perfectly.” It was about finally having a quiet place to put down everything I was carrying inside.
And maybe that’s exactly why a growing attraction to meditation, silence, or inner reflection is one of the most commonly reported signs of spiritual awakening.
2. Meditation Started Triggering Unexpected Emotional Experiences
As I went deeper into meditation, other strange things started happening too.
Sometimes I cried.
Tears would come out of nowhere during meditation. They didn’t always feel like sadness — instead, I felt a strange sense of relief, as if I’d finally handed all my pain over to God. If you’ve been carrying emotional pain for a long time, that release can feel incredibly comforting. I can’t say everyone will experience this, but for me, those tears became part of my journey.
Sometimes I felt overwhelmed.
There were moments when meditation felt so intense I got a little frightened. In those moments, I felt like I was getting close to something much bigger than myself — something I personally interpreted as the divine. Whether you understand that spiritually, emotionally, or as a simple effect of deep meditation, it was very real for me.
I sometimes heard ringing or bell-like sounds.
Another strange experience: hearing something like bells or ringing in my ears during deep meditation. For a second it felt like temple bells were ringing nearby — but when I opened my eyes, I was just sitting alone in my room. I later read that some people associate sounds like this with spiritual experiences, which made me curious. Important disclaimer: ringing in the ears can also be caused by non-spiritual conditions like tinnitus, so I wouldn’t automatically call this a spiritual awakening symptom. For me, it was simply one of the unusual experiences that pushed me to research spirituality further.
3. I Kept Seeing the Same Numbers Everywhere (1111, 2222, 5555…)
Another experience that completely caught my attention: repeated numbers — often called number synchronicities.
Numbers like 1111, 2222, and 5555 kept popping up in places I couldn’t ignore.
One day I was walking around my neighborhood, deep in thought about my problems. I glanced at a parked car and noticed a number starting with 2222. A little further ahead — another number starting with 5555.
I remember thinking: Why am I suddenly noticing these numbers everywhere?
Then I went home and looked at the clock. It was 11:11.
That really got my attention. I started researching it and discovered that some spiritual traditions interpret repeated numbers as synchronicities — meaningful signs from the universe. I found the idea fascinating.
Of course, seeing repeated numbers doesn’t scientifically prove the universe is sending you messages — our brains are also just really good at spotting patterns once something becomes important to us. But during my journey, these moments felt deeply meaningful and pushed me to explore spirituality even further.
4. I Experienced What I Understood as a “Twin Flame” Connection
Another deeply personal part of my journey: meeting someone I came to understand as my twin flame.
This was an unusual and profoundly peaceful experience. When you’re going through a painful period, sometimes even being around people doesn’t bring comfort — you just want to be alone, to pray, to meditate, to sit with yourself.
And then this person entered my life.
The connection felt almost like looking into a mirror. There were moments I felt like the way I thought, the way I felt, even the things that troubled me, were somehow reflected in them. When I was hurting, it felt like they could sense it too. It was a connection I found impossible to squeeze into an ordinary relationship label — which is how I came across the concept of a “twin flame” while researching spirituality.
I know people hold very different beliefs about twin flames, and I don’t believe every intense connection automatically means two people are twin flames. But this is how I personally experienced and understood that relationship during my spiritual journey.
(If you’re curious, I’ve written a separate article about my full twin flame journey.)
5. I Found a White Feather Exactly When I Needed a Sign
This is one of the experiences I remember most vividly.
I used to go for morning walks in my local park. One morning, I was walking and worrying — really worrying — about all the problems in my life. My overthinking had gotten so intense that I felt completely drained. Eventually I got so tired I sat down quietly under a tree.
That’s when I noticed a white feather.
At first I ignored it. But something made me look again, and a thought crossed my mind: “Finding a white feather isn’t something I see every day. Why not keep it?”
Curious, I looked up the spiritual meaning of finding a white feather and found many interpretations suggesting it symbolizes peace, protection, reassurance, or a reminder that we’re not alone.
For me, the timing is what made it meaningful. I’d been sitting there wondering, “How will everything become okay?” — and then I noticed that feather. I chose to see it as a gentle reminder: Don’t worry. You are not alone.
Whether you see a white feather as a spiritual sign or just a beautiful coincidence is completely personal. For me, it became one of the most comforting memories from a difficult chapter of my life.
6. I Started Craving Solitude Over Socializing
This was a major shift.
My neighborhood hosts frequent community gatherings and celebrations — people meeting up, talking, having fun. But during this period, all of it started feeling different to me. I no longer felt drawn to constant entertainment and socializing.
I preferred staying home. I preferred silence. I preferred a simple routine.
People around me would sometimes ask, “How can you stay home alone for so long?” Some even wondered if something was wrong with me. But internally, I didn’t feel like I was missing anything — I felt peaceful. I was learning to enjoy a simpler life.
Interestingly, this shift eventually became connected to something huge in my life today: my blog, Jyoti Simple Life. My growing love for simplicity, meaningful living, and a less complicated lifestyle became one of the reasons I started writing about simple living and minimalism. Looking back, I can see exactly how that difficult period quietly reshaped my values.
7. I Became Far More Sensitive to Other People’s Pain
One of the most positive shifts I noticed was in how I reacted to people.
Earlier, an argument could make me furious — I’d sometimes stop talking to someone entirely or hold onto anger for a long time. But slowly, something changed. I became more patient. Instead of reacting instantly, I started asking myself: “Why is this person behaving this way? Maybe they’re hurting too. Maybe they’re carrying something I know nothing about. Maybe this has more to do with their own struggles than with me.”
This shift didn’t happen overnight. But gradually, trying to understand someone’s situation instead of immediately judging them made my own anger shrink. I became calmer.
This was one of the most meaningful changes of my entire spiritual journey. Maybe spiritual growth isn’t always about dramatic, unusual experiences. Sometimes it’s simply about becoming a little kinder, calmer, and more understanding.
8. The Outside World Stopped Feeling So Important
My priorities were changing too.
Things that used to grab my attention easily just… stopped mattering as much. Instead, I found myself constantly asking:
- Who am I?
- Why am I here?
- What actually makes me happy?
- Why do I need so many things to feel complete?
I became far more interested in the universe, God, meditation, devotion, and inner peace. I started questioning the idea that happiness always comes from having more, doing more, or staying constantly busy — and this is exactly where spirituality and simple living began to merge for me. I began to understand that a peaceful life doesn’t have to be an exciting one. Sometimes, less really is more.
9. I Started Seeing My Entire Life Differently
Maybe the biggest spiritual awakening symptom I experienced wasn’t a single sign at all — it was a complete shift in how I viewed my whole life.
The difficult period that once felt like it was breaking me slowly became the period that taught me who I really was. I became more comfortable with silence. More drawn to meditation. More patient. I started noticing synchronicities. I grew curious about spirituality. I craved a simpler life.
And most importantly — I started looking inward instead of constantly searching for answers outside myself.
That journey eventually shaped the person I am today. It even led to the creation of Jyoti Simple Life, where I now write about simple living, minimalism, and finding meaning in an increasingly complicated world.
What Did My Spiritual Awakening Actually Teach Me?
Looking back now, I don’t think spiritual awakening is necessarily about suddenly becoming a completely different person. For me, it was much quieter than that.
It began with pain. Then came questions. Then curiosity. Then meditation. Then self-reflection. And slowly, I began discovering a different side of myself.
Sometimes life gets so hard that we’re forced to stop and look within — and maybe that’s exactly why a difficult chapter can quietly become the beginning of an unexpected journey.
If you’re recognizing some of these spiritual awakening symptoms in yourself, you don’t need to rush to label everything as a “spiritual sign.” Instead:
- Get curious about yourself
- Pay attention to your emotions
- Give yourself some quiet time
- Write down what you’re experiencing
- Meditate, if it feels right for you
And if something feels physically unusual or concerning — persistent ringing in your ears, severe anxiety, or other unexplained symptoms — talk to a healthcare professional rather than assuming it’s automatically spiritual.
Because sometimes the most important part of spiritual growth isn’t finding an explanation for every strange thing that happens. It’s learning to listen to yourself.
And for me, that’s exactly where my journey truly began.
Frequently Asked Questions About Spiritual Awakening Symptoms
What are the most common spiritual awakening symptoms?
The most commonly reported spiritual awakening symptoms include a growing attraction to meditation and silence, unexpected emotional release, noticing repeated numbers or synchronicities, feeling a deep soul-level connection with another person, craving solitude, increased empathy, and a shift in life priorities away from material things.
Is ringing in the ears really a sign of spiritual awakening?
Some people associate ringing or bell-like sounds during meditation with spiritual experiences. However, persistent ringing in the ears can also be caused by medical conditions like tinnitus, so it’s worth consulting a healthcare professional rather than assuming it’s purely spiritual.
Do repeated numbers like 1111 or 2222 actually mean something?
Many spiritual traditions interpret repeated numbers as synchronicities or meaningful signs from the universe. Scientifically, this can also be explained by the brain’s natural tendency to notice patterns once something becomes emotionally significant — but for many people going through a spiritual awakening, these moments feel deeply meaningful regardless of explanation.
How long does a spiritual awakening last?
There’s no fixed timeline. For some, it unfolds over months; for others, it’s a years-long gradual shift, as described in this personal account, where changes built slowly rather than happening overnight.
Can a spiritual awakening happen after a difficult or painful period in life?
Yes — many people report that their spiritual awakening began during or after a period of significant hardship, loss, or emotional pain, which often forces deep self-reflection and a search for meaning.
Have you ever gone through a difficult period that completely changed how you see life? Maybe your story doesn’t look exactly like mine. Maybe your sign was silence. Maybe it was meditation. Maybe it was simply the quiet realization that you weren’t the same person you used to be.
Sometimes the biggest changes inside us begin so softly that we only recognize them when we finally look back.
